Update my browser now. The Volvo XC40 is a very impressive tow car, with a strong engine and comfortable at speed. It tows a van weighing almost kg very effectively. In terms of stability, the Volvo is very secure. With or without a caravan, less road noise would be welcome on lengthy journeys.
That aside, the cabin is quiet and comfortable on long trips, with excellent seats and a very comfortable driving position. Without a caravan, the Volvo also drives very well. Inside, the Volvo is very well made and the interior styling is refreshingly modern. Boot capacity in the XC40 is reasonable rather than exceptional; you can certainly buy mainstream SUVs with much more luggage room for similar money. However, compared with its premium-badged competitors, we would rate the Volvo as being there or thereabouts.
It is priced competitively against other upmarket SUVs, will hold its value well, and comes with the additional reassurance of an exceptionally high score from the safety experts at Euro NCAP. All told, the Volvo XC40 is an extremely desirable tow car; stable with a caravan behind and practical for an SUV of this size. Less road noise would be welcome on lengthy journeys; thinner rear pillars would help improve visibility when reversing. Its first task was to tackle a full tow test.
We know from experience that the XC40 tows well. But will we be just as impressed after an extended tow on all manner of roads, and having driven the Volvo over long distances without a caravan behind it? And is it practical enough as a tow car and an everyday drive? The XC40 is available with both front-and four-wheel drive, and a choice of petrol and diesel — the diesels are better suited to towing.
The D4 is the more powerful of the diesels. The punchy D4 engine pulled the caravan up to speed quickly and kept up momentum on hilly A-roads. The electronic parking brake held car and caravan still and released smoothly, and the car pulled up the 1-in slope without fuss.
There was also no fuss at motorway speeds. Occasionally there were very slight side-to-side movements on overtaking high-sided vehicles, but these soon ebbed away with no need for steering corrections. The R-Design model comes with sports suspension, and the stiffer set-up compared with other XC40 models is likely to improve stability.
However, the ride remains comfortable. The automatic gearbox creeps smoothly, and the engine and transmission are untroubled by reversing up a grassy slope.Twrp a95x

The new Volvo XC40 is a handsome-looking small SUV that is the right size for many buyers and features a lot of standard safety equipment.
Awarded attention to detail
However, Volvo fell short in designing two critical driver interfaces that get used every day: The shifter and center control screen. It is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and can be equipped with all-wheel drive, which is typical for this segment. We borrowed one from Volvo, and these are our first impressions. Volvo says the T5 should sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 6. It sometimes made the SUV lurch forward when starting up at a stop light.
The EPA estimates 26 mpg overall, with 23 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. The standard wheels are 18 inches, but our borrowed car rode on optional inch wheels and tires, producing a ride that was typically stiff for a Volvo.
Even larger inch wheels are available. The steering is too light and lacks enough feedback for the XC40 to be called a fun-to-drive vehicle. In order to engage Drive or Reverse, drivers need to move the gear selector twice in the appropriate direction, like a double-tap.
If they miss the second tap, the transmission stays in Neutral. This can result in a delay during a parking maneuver and will surely frustrate drivers. It looks inviting and high-tech, resembling a tablet computer, and serves as the command center for climate, audio, and phone controls. But using the system while driving is frustrating, thanks to the multiple taps, swipes, and scrolls necessitated to navigate through the layered menu structure.
Volvo seats are typically very comfortable, and these are no exception. The cabin stays commendably quiet except for an engine growl. The XC40 comes with lots of thoughtful storage spots, including generous door pockets, an open bin in front of the console, a removable waste bin that sits just in front of the center armrest, and a bag hook attached to the front of the glove box.
A dedicated cell-phone storage space frees up cup holders and other areas commonly used by passengers to store their phones. By folding the rear seats down and opening the standard power rear liftgate, the cargo area can hold a mountain bike with the front wheel removed.
We evaluated the Pilot Assist II driver-assistance technology in our tested XC60, and found that the system has good judgment of lane markings and the ability to respond to vehicles in front as they change lanes and exit or enter the highway. The Pilot Assist II system is part of the Premium package; blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are part of the Vision package; and the surround-view camera comes as part of the Advanced package.

There are some shortcomings: In particular, while Volvo has a reputation for exceptional seat ergonomics, the XC40 is a notable exception to the rule. The front headrests are pushed aggressively forward and have only limited vertical adjustment. This means that some drivers will have trouble finding a comfortable seating position.
As expected from a manufacturer whose reputation was built on passenger safety, most of today's advanced driving aids are standard or optional. Every XC40 is equipped with Volvo's City Safety feature, which can warn the driver if it senses an imminent collision with a vehicle, pedestrian, bicyclist or large animal.
It'll even apply the brakes if you don't react quickly enough. The optional rear cross-traffic alert system will also hit the brakes if a car is about to collide with you while backing up. Other systems include headlights that turn as you rotate the steering wheel, the semiautomated Pilot Assist function and automated parking.
Not every luxury automaker has been able to package its core strengths in a small, relatively affordable crossover. It's a bit late to the party, but Volvo has done its homework with the XC The Volvo XC40 is a compact luxury crossover with seating for five. Three trim levels are available: Momentum, R-Design and Inscription. Upgrading to the R-Design doesn't cost much more and adds exterior styling enhancements and more luxury features.
Each is also available with several available features packages and stand-alone options. The XC40 is sold with two powertrains, both utilizing a turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The front-wheel-drive T4 produces horsepower and pound-feet of torque. Opting for the all-wheel-drive T5 boosts output to hp and lb-ft.
Standard safety features include Volvo On Call communications, a rearview camera, lane departure warning and mitigation, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking. Selecting the R-Design trim adds inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, LED foglights and cornering lights, a black roof, black exterior trim, keyless entry, a hands-free tailgate, dual-zone climate control, a cooled glovebox, steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles, front-seat extendable thigh cushions, a power passenger seat, leather upholstery with faux suede inserts, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, upgraded ambient lighting, and a navigation system.
The luxe Inscription starts with the Momentum's equipment and adds unique wheels, a panoramic sunroof, chrome roof rails, keyless entry, a hands-free tailgate, wood trim, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and the R-Design's LED foglights and cornering lights, power passenger seat, dual-zone climate control, cooled glovebox, upgraded ambient lighting and navigation system.
